Conventional wisdom says that these events are unrelated, but conventional wisdom would be wrong.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Caltech <a href=\"http:\/\/sportsillustrated.cnn.com\/2007\/basketball\/ncaa\/01\/07\/bc.bkc.caltechwins.ap\/index.html\">ended a 207-game losing streak<\/a> this weekend against Bard College, but they haven&#8217;t yet started conference play. I mention this only because Caltech is in the same conference as Pomona (Pomona-Pitzer team), which has, historically, a considerably better basketball program.<\/p>\n<p>Big college football programs tend to have 85 or so scholarship athletes (enough to go three deep in every position with extras); this fall the Pomona student newspaper reported that they&#8217;re having trouble getting its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tsl.pomona.edu\/index.php?article=2048\">37 players<\/a> to practice. What? Football isn&#8217;t <em>everything<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>This a week after Boise State upset Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl and the state of Idaho suffered a mild earthquake from the jumping-up-and-down of one and a half million joyous residents.<\/p>\n<p>Back to books.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/01\/07\/books\/review\/Powers2.t.html?_r=1&amp;oref=slogin\">How to Speak a Book<\/a> (by Richard Powers): I have yet to read a novel of his (though I have one or two on my shelves and have heard good things about them, but I still have <em>House of Leaves<\/em> to finish), but I found this short little NY Times article quite fascinating. I would call it a must-read of sorts for those who write fiction and who are interested in the process of both reading and writing. Perambulation and reading, reading out loud and other such things &#8230; all already dealt with in research on reading. The <em>writing<\/em> bit interests me.
