Tuesday Treats

1. Skyfall
2. Liz & Dick
3. Bedazzled

Sometimes you treat yourself. To a hot mess sundae!

I.

Oh my … yes.

You’ve got an over-qualified cast (as usual), a good script, and meticulous production. Strong and tight plotting, all in all, and a good exploration of the character.

It’s the most meta of the (recent?) Bonds … it’s explicitly about bringing back ‘traditional’ features that had been ‘missing’ from the other Daniel Craig movies, as well as taking us back to the Connery era in some regards, while maintaining a level of realism. The set pieces? Oh my … well-staged. Was it long? Yes. Was it ever boring? No. Did it suggest many side alleys I wanted to explore? Definitely.

The only curious thing? It was all old people with us in the theater. Must be some sort of senior-discount-Tuesday.

II.

Oh my … what a mess.

You drink to it.

LiLo has a sub-Mean-Girls delivery and it’s not just that she doesn’t know what (sort of) movie she’s in, she’s just not invested in it. Then it just dies at the end … Burton passes away and the ‘movie’ ends. We’re not invested in any of the ‘characters.’ There’s no plot arc, not tension or development. Ms. S. indicates that she has the book it’s based on somewhere in storage and that I might like it, and that it’s pretty good.

Will this become, in the future, a drinking game feature? Perhaps … but only once one has started drinking for the evening.

III.

Oh my … hot mess.

Having watched much SG-1, I can only think of LIz Hurley now as doing a Vala impersonation. It’s a great opportunity for B.F. to play multiple comic roles … we’re not talking ‘quality’ here, but it is a great late-night flick.

Also: “magical black man ™.” And a feel-good-ending.
