Someone’s in hot water, or: A saga sequel, taking care of business, not working overtime. And a footnote.
I. Saga Sequel
It’s Chucky, it’s Jason, it’s Freddy … it’s Star Wars episode VII, coming 2015 or so.
It’s a leaking water heater!
We’ve placed towels around the base to catch any collecting or dripping water. Tomorrow and Monday we’ll check it for continued leakage … and if it’s there, back to the main office I go.
Ah, poor Kenny. They might just send Dudley this time.
I am amused by it; Ms. S. is frustrated. I am amused so that I don’t have to feel frustrated. At least we have hot water. Last week when my father left a phone message he indicated that the guy who installed new carpet for them this last summer did not stretch it properly; now it’s buckling. He is ‘resigned,’ but he didn’t sound frustrated. We’re not the only ones. What else can you do?
That is all.
II. Taking Care of Business
My WordPress installs are sluggish.
Other domains with the same hosting service on the same account aren’t that bad, and one is basically straight HTML. So it has something to do with the WordPress installs … but is is: [1] the proxy web server? [2] the MySQL backend? [3] the (shared?) PHP instance? [3] particular PHP functions or pages? [4] particular SQL queries, or [5] something else?
One of the things I’m doing is consolidating; I have a number of old course websites running separate databases and subdomains that I’m collecting in a single database with their sites as subdirectories of a main site. This should reduce a little overhead, and it at least makes maintenance and cataloging easier for me. Once that’s done I’ll have two WordPress installs for myself (vs. nearly a dozen) and one for my brother. All are minor in disk usage, hits, and the like.
But it feels like Spring Cleaning, though in autumn. Cleaning is cleansing; this purifying is a purging. That is catharsis … it’s refreshing.
III. Overtime? Bah
Ms. S. mourns the end of SG-1. We also now have less than a season and a half left of Oz (as we’ve watched five of season five so far, though they’re reruns for her, only new for me). We picked back up with season 1 of New Girl, which generates more laughs than it seems it deserves. Neither of us misses it when we’re not watching it, but while watching it it’s quite a relief. And we threw in the beginning of season 5 of Parks & Recreation, which Ms. S. got me into.
Once Ms. S.’s production wraps up and she and I have more free time, we’ll reevaluate what we’re watching. We need another ‘anchor’ show to replace SG-1, which first ran concurrent with and then took over for TNG. There’s the possibility of DS-9; I’ve contemplated returning to BSG.
It’s all about TLAs …
