Back in my day …

… I would be embarrassed to turn in radically unreadable and incorrect papers/essays/homework for a grade.

That does not stop my students. By the 6th semester one should be able to conjugate verbs, apply the right adjective endings, spell properly, and formulate complete and meaningful sentences.

And yet when it comes to grading I suffer through piles of manure. Misspelled words, verb forms that do not exist even in the most pathologically psychotic dialects, and jumbles of verbiage that not even drunken monkeys at typewriters would dare call sentences.

I’ve written better Hungarian with my eyes closed, my tongue tied, and my fingers frost-bitten while under the influence of every alkaloid known to postmodern man. And I’ll have a crapload more to read and grade this weekend once they (my undies) write exams and turn in papers.

Yuck.

This evening I stopped by the co-op to get some chocolate milk and water — after last night’s enjoyable cast party (but where was the other Josh, Hossein, Rachel, Karen, etc.? Why only the grads and near grads, except for Dirk?) I found myself out of not only wine but also water. My cheesecake was so well received I almost blushed. It seems to have been universally liked, if I do say so myself. No, liked is the wrong word. One or two called it the best they had had, others were incredulous that I’d made it rather than gotten it from a bakery. But it was just a slight variation on the Good Eats recipe — Alton Brown to the rescue. And we had good enough wine (Giant 47 Pound Rooster, as well as Trapiche and Conquista malbecs, both from Argentina — the Trapische I got at Woodman’s; Todd bought and brought the Conquista from BArriques, I think).

Today I’ve been lazy and have been watching Jericho. I’ll return soon to my TV for another episode or two before bed. It has gotten better in some sense — I’m in the 2nd half of the season now. When i get in tomorrow I also need to get the most recent episodes of Heroes and Lost — I’ve missed out, so far, on what happened “this week.” Shame on me. Evidently Jericho wrapped up its season the other day.

As for music, I’m near the end of Sarah McLachlin. I have some of her CDs back in storage in Idaho. I must have started listening to her because of the albums Mike had, and I retain a soft spot for her. There are some great songs there, but far too often I find cookie-cutter, formulaic stuff and I realize that she’s this close to being the Michael Bolton of the female vocalist crowd … unless that is Celine Dion.

Eurovision is this weekend … but since I don’t have cable I won’t get/watch it.
