Some junk food, junk entertainment, a gift, and so on. All in a three-part diary form.
I. The Gift
In the early afternoon my phone rang … and unexpected and unrecognized but local number; it turned out to be a florist looking to deliver something. That’s curious, I thought. He was in the neighborhood but was having a hard time finding the right building and apartment. I put on a sweater and went out front once he arrived, and signed for a small bundle.
It’s a nice arrangement, almost a horizonta wreathe with a tall red candle in the middle. I cleared off a shelf on a bookcase for it. It was from my parents; when I last spoke with my father he inquired as to the correct way to spell Ms. S.’s name … and evidently this was why! It was quite thoughtful, and provided a nice piece of punctuation to the day for me.
II. Junk Food
Ms. S. had a long afternoon walk or run, but came back feeling down … down with life, etc. She was scheduled to meet another (somewhat mutual) friend for drinks tonight pre-shift, as said friend is back in town from her first fall back at school, and Ms. S. is dreading the comparisison (life, studies, common professors), the inevitable comments about how great things are going while she, on the other hand, is in an unsatisfying job, etc.
And thus the junk entertainment — and some good stuff, below — but after some of said entertainment a mutual decision was reached that some junk take-out or drive-through was in order, and off to Taco Bell she drove. I’m going to try a few tacos from the ‘Fresco’ menu … all quite new to me, even if not to others out there.
And so I have the table set, the plates and napkins out, etc.
III. Junk Entertainment
We began with the most recent episode of ‘The X-Files,’ “Irresistible,” which comes after “Aubrey.” It’s been a while since I’ve seen it and I recognized the ‘villain’ now as Nick Chinlund, whom I know from ‘Ultraviolet’, an episode of ‘Castle,’ the few clips of the craptastic SyFy movie ‘Wyvern’ that I’ve seen, and perhaps a few other things. He was in ‘Buffy,’ it appears.
I have more to say about this episode, one devoid of the paranormal or supernatural, one that has an interesting tone post-Newtown (and talk of ‘monsters’). But it’s the episodes gender politics that I find quite disturbing and need of more reflection … so I’ll return to it later.
Afterward I decided to give Ms. S. a taste of a couple short-lived series that I’ve seen but that she hasn’t: ‘Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles,’ and ‘Dollhouse.’ Neither seemed to go over that well. I’m not sure if it’s Ms. S.’s mood today, the shows in general, or their weak first episodes.
So we’re going to eat dinner — Taco Bell — to ‘Die Hand die verletzt.’
