Midmonth: the semester ends not with a bang but a whimper

1. The semester is “over” — except for hours and hours of grading.

2. Obligatory Friday Pamela Anderson quote: “When [Howard] Stern asked her why she married Kid Rock in the first place — after divorcing Tommy Lee, she once said she’d never get married again — Anderson said, ‘It was a big mistake, but I was in St. Tropez, I would have married the fisherman on the corner!'” [source]

3. On writing and translating: translating is an under appreciated art, as is the skill of comprehending and manipulating metaphors. But there is one place where the trouble of translation should not be undertaken, and that is when a student of native language A is writing an essay in target language B; DO NOT under any circumstances write the essay in A and translate to B. Write it in F**KING B to start with.

This has been a public service announcement.

4. Best bad 70s videos (and such):

I also stumbled upon a brief video by my favorite of all Hungary Gypsy groups, Ando Drom. Too bad the sound quality sucks.

Joachim Witt’s song der Goldene Reiter (ca. 1981) is a great piece of Neue Deutsche Welle Nostalgia … but the video? Painful.

5. Finally, proof that stupidity is not limited to the good ol’ US-of-A, a Russia teen sues over evolution teaching: “A Russian court on Wednesday held hearings in an unprecedented lawsuit brought by a 15-year-old student who says being taught the theory of evolution in school violates her rights and insults her religious beliefs.” Cry me a river.

Friday evening, here I come … friends and movies (well, once I do laundry, go shopping, and vacuum, but it’s within sight …)
