Saturday shopping joy & Frozen custard

I finished season 6 of Buffy last night. Rather, this morning. As a result I stayed in bed until noon, and after I got up and showered Jen called, asking whether I wanted to go along for a TJ Maxx trip (Westgate). Twice in one week for me (that part of town; last week it was Westgate to watch “Babel,” which was excellent), so a bit after three they showed up and off we (Jen, Christoph, yours truly) went in a wobbly ol’ Hyundai that’s missing one headlight.

Christoph bolted for Half-Price Books (he didn’t get hit crossing the street, it appears), and Jen and I browsed through clothes and kitchen supplies before ending up with a row of stinky candles and overpriced candlesticks. $15? Please.

At Half-Price I was really quite tempted to pick up a $6 edition of Anna Karenina, which I’ve never read. Were it only the 1000-page book I would have ignored it, but it also came with the 1948 film version with Vivien Leigh … but I restrained myself. Responsible with the money, you see.

Not so with the food. After shopping we were all hungry so stopped by Pasquel’s on Monroe, and after a tasty burrito sandwich on my part and plenty of chips all around (a big “Cowboy Burrito” for Christoph and a too large enchilada dinner for Jen) we moseyed across the street to Michael’s Frozen Custard.

West-costers might not be too familiar with frozen custard, the denser, slightly warmer, creamier cousin of ice cream made with eggs. It’s like frozen eggnog but without the nutmeg, I tell you. Actually, that sounds disgusting, but the large coffee-chocolate-chip malt shake I got was delicious. So much for responsible eating.

I really need to start going to the SERF or NAT to work out, but even though I live pretty much as a solitary person, I prefer doing things with friends, so I’m not sure that I’ll muster the motivation to start going to either on-campus gym on my own.

In the food preparation realm, I’ve started using my French Press again. Before I left for Berlin I gave it, my mixer, my Crock Pot, and my coffee grinder to Mike for safe keeping or such. Over Thanksgiving I picked up the slow cooker and mixer, although Mike gave me the wrong and abbreviated set of attachments for the latter, so over xmas I picked up the right ones from him. For my birthday he gave me a new grinder. At xmas I also picked up my French Press, which he doesn’t use, since he has a larger one of his own, so now I can make myself a single cup of coffee rather easily, rather than using my $5 St. Vinny’s “Mr. Coffee” machine, which is good for 3 cups, but not for 1.

So much caffeine, so little time.

Season 7, here I come. Who needs a social life when I have Buffy?
