It’s April — it was in the 20s today.

And it was colder in northern Wisconsin. On the news I just heard that parts of the northern Wisconsin got 20 inches.

In April.

That’s why my windows are closed and I’m curling up on the sofa with The Two Towers. Alas, alone.

Tuesday night I took some time out and re-watched The Fellowship of the Ring (extended edition) — I’m still waiting for Elron to snarl “Mr. Baggins …” and toss off a pair of cracked sunglasses. After all these years it still entertains.

This evening: Lost. Hurly played the schemer with Sawyer, and the irony is, of course, that Jack’s back. And with the Kate flashbacks, nifty but almost pointless as they were (since from her mother we learned nothing new or interesting), we at least had one of the truths of Lost — so close yet so far from a connection. Sawyer’s old flame just didn’t give Kate his (Sawyer’s) name. Just imagine if she had, how we would have to reinterpret everything we’ve learned these past few seasons? Just as if Claire and Jack somehow were to find out about each other, etc. If somewhere in some lost luggage we find a photo of Jack’s father, and Sawyer says, “Hey, I know that dude.” And Claire asks, “Jack, what are you doing with a picture of my father?” And then the shit rains down.

But it won’t happen.

I listened to more Pearl Jam today … I probably have 4 hours or so to go. It doesn’t roll by as Nirvana did. As David Bowie did. I admit PJ’s musical talent, and I like some songs, but PJ is not designed for long-play-list heavy listening.

Stupid Criminal of the Day:

Teen tried to hire hit man to kill ex-girlfriend’s fetus

COLVILLE, Washington (AP) — An 18-year-old pleaded guilty to trying to hire a hit man to kill his ex-girlfriend’s nearly full-term fetus and was sentenced to more than six years in prison.

Charles D. Young received 76 1/2 months in prison Tuesday after pleading guilty to first-degree solicitation to commit manslaughter. State law allows for such a count when a viable fetus is the intended target.

Prosecutors allege Young, then 17, offered an undercover officer posing as a hit man $3,250 last October to injure his estranged 17-year-old girlfriend so badly that her fetus would die.

Young was arrested after a classmate learned of his plan and went to police, who arranged to have Young and the undercover officer meet, prosecutor John Troberg said. Young told the officer in a recorded conversation that he didn’t care whether his former girlfriend survived the attack, Troberg said.

Young, of Suncrest, Washington, northwest of Spokane, apologized to the girl and her family at sentencing, Troberg said.

Young, who learned of the pregnancy after breaking up with the girl, initially expressed interest in raising their child but later told his ex-girlfriend he wanted nothing to do with the baby, the prosecutor said.

Young’s attorney, Bevan Maxey, said his client is an intelligent young man who got bad advice.

The attorney says “his client is an intelligent man who got bad advice.”

“Intelligent”? “Bad advice”? How about neither. If you plan a felony, if you plan a murder and hire a hit man you are, by definition, not intelligent. Bad advice? What? He listened to the little voice in his head? Was that that “bad advice” he got? Who advised him to kill the fetus and/or girlsfriend? Who said, “Hey, jackass, hire a hit man”? Yeah, it was Mr. then-17-year-old Young. Mr. Intelligent.

What else is the lawyer going to say? “My client is a deranged lunatic and we put him our of his misery it would be putting him of our misery.” I guess not. I don’t support capital punishment; I don’t think a fetus is a “person” (try: blob of snot and bones); but I don’t have any sympathy for stupid people, either. And Mr. Young is a stupid, stupid person.

Sometimes I think we need prison colonies.

On the moon.
