Windy Wednesday

Just a breeze today. And just a breeze of a blog.

Where to begin? The ‘girls’ … go me up around 4am. And then off and on until nearly 5:30, when they get fed. Really, it was A, not E. Scratch scratch at the bed post. Jump on the bed and check to see whether I’m alive, and return to scratching, or sticking her claws in the box spring and plucking them out one at a time. Pluck-twang … pluck-twang … pluck-twang …

… it’s tempting to pull the cat carrier from the closet and relocate her there. But it seems cruel, an overreaction, and hardly a solution.

Happy Halloween! I should say. Ms. S. has a mid-day shift today, one that started early for some reason, so is running nine or so hours, and I am home this evening to hand out candy, which I have done dutifully.

It’s breezy and mild autumn weather. Last evening I carved one of the smaller pumpkins and placed it on the porch between the gourds. I lit it again tonight and received compliments from some of the trick-or-treaters. The pumkin flesh I scooped and cut out led to a batch each of roasted (and then pureed) pumpkin and roasted pumpkin seeds.

Full darkness has arrived; I doubt any more kids will be by for candy. I gave out only about half the basket. We’ll toss the rest … neither of us consumes much candy these days and the candy we bought was purchased precisely because it didn’t really appeal to our taste buds.

Which is why we stayed away from the peanut butter cups!

But instead as a treat I have a batch of ice cream chilling before I put it in the machine a bit later. A deep chocolate with a strong dose of vanilla. Perhaps a little brandy before it goes in the machine to help fend off the ice.

Last night we went out to see “Cloud Atlas,” fearing that it would not remain long in the theaters due to its weak box office performance. It was an 8:30pm showing, so we were not out until about 11:30 … but it was extremely well worth it. I’m sure I’ll have more to say about it later, for — its content and style aside — it raises questions about literary adaptations and relationships to the source material. I’d also place it in a category with other movies I’ve see this year that I’d be likely to see again.

No movies tonight, though. Instead it’s our end-of-October treat and, perchance, a midnight trip to The Alcove.

But for now? Back to the ice cream. Back to the mushrooms in the oven. Back to work.
