I cooked and cleaned today in anticipation of a pre-Easter dinner with Ms. S.’s parents, and I found it glorious.
1. The social aspect, the stories, all that, are our own personal matter.
2. We got lots of chocolate as an Easter gift, though! And some cookies. And so on. A chocolate-covered cake in the shape of a lamb!
3. Soups of the day: Carrot & Cauliflower, and Blackeye-pea & Tomato. The former is incredibly creamy; the latter had a good kick to it. They both went over very well.
4. I made mini-quiches; Ms. S.’s mother brought deviled eggs. Yay!
5. Two breads, too: a plain, white sourdough, and a sourdough-based rye (50% rye, 50% white) … both turned out okay, I think. The former was a nice boule andĀ I sent about a quarter of it home with the guests; I sent about a quarter to half of the rye with them. It didn’t rise as much and was a much squatter loaf, but spongey and by no means dense.
6. Ms. S.’s mother brought oatmeal chocolate chip cookies; I made the chocolate chip cookies fromĀ Vegan with a Vengeance (highly recommended, book and recipe). And she brought cake; I made a pistachio ice cream (almond-coconut milk based). And so dessert could have room temperature, wam-from-the-oven, and frozen.
7. Wine and beer.
It’s as if everything came in twos. That’s not counting the pasta salad or the roasted vegetables, though both included carrots.
And now: TV rotation with Ms. S.! Could the day be more perfect?
