The Lives of Others and 40 minutes of Laibach

I turned on the TV just as — in my time zone — the winner for best foreign film was announced, and, lo and behold, the German entry won.

I was expecting a win for Pan’s Labyrinth, a truly entertaining and amazing movie, but The Lives of Others is a worthy winner.

I’ve seen it twice so far and recommend it without reservation. Put it in your Netflix queue. Go see it in a theater.

During the day I managed to write a little fiction around noon with some friends. I ingested four cups of coffee and discovered that the Alton Brown Method for steak also works well for chicken breasts (sear the meat on the range, 30 seconds per side, and then cook in the oven at around 500F for a minute and a half per side) — tender, juicy, the perfect lightly browned skin. I finished my failed pumpernickel.

I got through a lot of Laibach today and at the moment have about 40 minutes of The Occupied Europe Tour 1985 left. There is some really amazing music in the ten or so albums I have, although quite of bit of it — hell, most of it — is an acquired taste at best. I do recommend their album of covers, Sympathy for the Devil. That’s all it is: covers of “Sympathy for the Devil.” I started this morning with a few songs leftover from kidneythieves. Next up? Lauren Ciechanowski … you wouldn’t know her stuff, since she’s the college-aged younger sister of a friend from Berlin, who just gave me Lauren’s album on a whim. I’ve never listened to of all of it (Don’t Quite Your Day Job).

Grammar commentary:

The simple past tense form of “shrink” is “shrank” and the past participle is “shrunk”; it should be “Honey, I Shrank the Kids,” not “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.” (Thanks a lot, Disney.)

“Honey, I’ve shrunk the kids” would be standard, and also grammatically acceptable is “Honey, I’ve shrunken the kids” (though deplorable from a child-rearing point of view).

To conclude: grow your own snowflakes!
