2013.03.16: Waffling

Ms. S. worked an extra shift and sleeps mightily. For breakfast/brunch she gets a waffle; since Clinton at the least and a certain Doonsbury strip we taken “to waffle” as synonymous with “to flip flop”, “to vacillate”; and the waffle is a food that can be easily … flipped. But language friends also tell us that the term may also have an origin in the Scottish “waff”, or gust of wind.

As I’ve reported before and elsewhere, I’m a bit of a conflicted omnivore.

2013.03.15: “No matter how paranoid you are, you’re not paranoid enough.”

It’s an all ‘X-Files’ and ‘Millennium’ entry today.

2013.03.14: “If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe.”

So I learned from Carl Sagan in ‘Cosmos’. In any case, it’s Pi(e) Day.

For those who don’t pay attention, the simple ‘logic’ is as follows: March 14 = 3/14 (in the U.S.) = 3.14 = pi … pi Day!

But if we ‘mirror’ 3.14 we ‘get’ PIE (don’t think too hard about it, just hard enough), so it’s also Pie Day, and in 2010, I think it was, I made four pies or so for our Pie Day activities, and additional pies were brought by colleagues for our pastry-heavy celebration.

And March 14 is also Einstein’s birthday (1879); there are too many wonderful quotes by Albert that get tossed around (see also: en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Albert_Einstein, especially the ‘disputed’ section), so I’ll just lead with one of my favorites and call it a day: “As far as the laws of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain; and as far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality.”

Links, Pie:

Inside: Thai, not pie; left and right; a kitchen sojourn.

2013.03.13: Today in brief …

1. Today in ‘Millennium’ Frank had to “Beware of the Dog”. Or, rather, dogs.

2. Today in ‘X-Files’ Scully almost died again, but of course didn’t; Skinner and others were mistrusted; and we ended up more or less where we began.

3. I made a 2lb. batch of blackeye peas this afternoon; they cooked a bit more quickly than expected, so are quite tender already. I portioned out 12 half-cup servings and put them in the fridge; the rest I put in a single bowl for later portioning … we’ll be eating them into next week!

4. I discovered that the Beach Cliff (owned by Bumble Bee … as many things are) “Fish Steaks” (herring, ‘in Louisiana Hot Sauce’ … not that hot) are quite tasty in a bowl of salad with a little balsamic vinaigrette.

5. I also learned that a set of 110 straight squats will cause a good amount of burn … flippy-floppy legs afterward, but they recover.

6. We have to get out of this state, which is sucking our souls dry, and we’re currently looking at the Northwest. The Pacific is an option, though we’re also considering the Boise area, as I have family there, and it seems the transition might be easier. At the same time, looking for jobs is painful … it’s difficult having advanced degrees but not having available jobs. “Over-educated”, they say.

7. If I believed in hell, I’m pretty sure there would be a special place in it for Iowa license plate ‘870 CZ*’ (obscured a bit to protect the guilty, a white Chevy truck), hauling several dozen cages of chickens, each cage packed with four or so birds, and leaving them outside in a parking lot overnight … when it’s getting below freezing.

8. Daily W.A.: “A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy”, based, evidently, on a Bergman film, but clearly related to a certain play by Shakespeare as well. For Ms. S.: Julie Hagerty was Poppy in Bogdanovich’s adaptation.

2012.03.12: “Nothing is less real than realism […]”

“[…] Details are confusing. It is only by selection, by elimination, by emphasis, that we get at the real meaning of things.” (Georgia O’Keeffe)

Confusion, creativity, and craft beer.

2013.03.10: “I am the … Jude Law”

… if J.L. did a Judge Dredd remake?

It’s Sunday evening, we had delicious and filling food down the road — hint: margaritas … quesadillas … fried ice cream … well, I splurged on that, but someone else was much better behaved –, and now it’s time to find something entertaining to watch. Somehow Jude Law came up in conversation over dinner; “Gattaca” was discussed, for example, and his 2009 “Hamlet” production … so now we’re in the mood.

Time to break the Law.

The rotation is on break — we’re between seasons of ‘X-Files’ and ‘Millennium’ … but we’ll return to them shortly.

2013.02.23: Pollo fundido … for the win?

Dinner at Palenque in Kamiah last night … and a blackberry margerita to get things going.

The daily special was pollo fundido and I didn’t want something too large, too heavy. It was reasonably sized and delicious in a trashy sort of way … the cheese slices on top, not quite melted. I’m not going to complain … the cheese and sauce mingled and provided the right level of tang.
